Freeform unveiled Motherland: Fort Salem, a female-led supernatural drama that looks to be an awesome addition to the network. Created by Eliot Laurence (creator of TNT’s Claws), comes a series set in an alternate, present-day America where the Salem Witch trials ended in a very different fashion.

In an alternate America where witches ended their persecution over 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the government to fight for their country, Motherland: Fort Salem follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world—but with supernatural tactics and weapons.

Power is a visionary drama produced by Courtney Kemp and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson that straddles the glamorous Manhattan lifestyles of the rich and infamous and the underworld of the international drug trade. The cast is led by Omari Hardwick as drug kingpin and nightclub impresario James “Ghost” St. Patrick, Joseph Sikora, as his brother in arms in the drug business, Tommy Egan; Naturi Naughton plays James’ fierce, loyal wife Tasha St. Patrick and Lela Loren as his first love Assistant U.S. Attorney, Angela Valdes.

In the trailer for Season 4 (see below), Ghost’s world comes crashing down around him when he’s framed for the murder of former US attorney Greg Knox. Taking him down is the number one priority for new Assistant U.S. Attorney John Mak (Fast & Furious alum Sung Kang), who’s willing to do anything to put Ghost behind bars. Assisting Mak in the prosecution is AUSA Mike Sandoval (One Life to Live alum David Fumero), who’s the actual culprit behind Knox’s death. Meanwhile, Tasha struggles to protect her children from the spotlight of the trial; Tommy faces a loyalty challenge and Angela tries to put her failed relationship with Ghost behind her.

Power returns June 25 at 9:00 PM.

It’s a rare feat nowadays when a US soap promo demands your full attention, but ABC’s General Hospital is doing just that with their new winter promo.

Set to the tune of “Mad Love” by vocal powerhouse JoJo (off her return album of the same name available on iTunes), the sleek, primetime-esque 30-second promo foretells trouble for a handful in Port Charles. Premiering exclusively on TVLine, the video spotlights several stories involving series stars Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth), Roger Howarth (Franco), Vinessa Anotine (Jordan), Donnell Turner (Curtis), Anthony Montgomery (Andre), Robert Palmer Watkins (Dillon), Hayley Erin (Kiki), Ryan Paevey (Nathan), Kirsten Storms (Maxie), Chad Duell (Michael), Chloe Lanier (Nelle), Laura Wright (Carly) and Maurice Benard (Sonny).

“Some love stories are meant to last, but in Port Charles nothing is guaranteed,” reads the text overlay on the various scenes. “Her story is about to get twisted. His story is headed for disaster. This winter their stories continue.”

Given that (good) promos tease what’s to come, what can viewers expect in the coming weeks and months? Will Sonny and Carly’s relationship get back on track after the loss of their son? Will Nathan and Maxie’s wedding go off as planned? Will Dillon and Kiki finally give into temptation? Just how twisted will Jordan’s love life get if she must choose between Andre and Curtis? Will GH’s resident hot doctor Griffin take a liking to Elizabeth, complicating her controversial pairing with Franco?

Tune in weekdays on ABC to find out!

General Hospital’s promo team should be proud of themselves. It would be great if the series released promos like this every month, showcasing various stories. This shows some thought was put into the idea for publicity, I hope it continues.

Having watched and enjoyed the Norwegian version, it’ll be interesting to see the spin the US version takes and how they handle the gay storyline.  We’ll have a review and clips of the show in next week’s column.

Harry is stunned to see James again. But how will James react?

Also this week, on A Place to Call Home James and Harry come face to face.  What happens next between them is a shocker.  Plus, we take a look at the new gay storyline on Welsh soap Rownd a Rownd and Oliver returns in the season premiere of Canadian drama This Life. And on Days of Our Lives, Paul and Sonny are still into each other, but neither of them have gotten past Will’s death and it’s coming between them.  But when Paul is nearly murdered, will that be what finally brings them together?  All this and more!

PICKS AND PANS

A Place To Call Home (Australia)

The cinematography on this show stays beautiful and lush.

I did like James throwing Gino’s biblical reasons for not being more open minded about James being gay back in Gino’s face.  Funny how Gino had no response for all the things he had done to go against the Bible, huh?

I really like the friendship between Harry and Sarah and I love that Sarah hasn’t stopped loving Rene and still respects his memory.

That was a really great scene with he and Olivia where James professed his commitment to his child.  And no matter what she feels for Lloyd, Olivia is still so in love with James.  She showed that by her determination to be friends with Henry.  It took a lot of her to do that and she didn’t have to.  She did it to make life easier for James.

vlcsnap-2016-10-10-11h39m19s635

I’m glad that James was able to tell Henry he loved him.  Sweet scene.  As was the wonderfully shot underwater scenes of them together right before Harry shows up.

So… James doesn’t remember Harry?  Wow I did not see that coming.  I thought James was pretending, but clearly he was not.  I guess it was from the electroshock treatments James had back in Season 2.  They said it might mess with his memory and it would make perfect sense he would forget Harry since that was the point of the procedure.  Great way to use a plot point we’ve seen in soaps dozens of times. Loved it, loved it.

I got a kick out of the three ladies scheming against Regina.  Fun!

And the previews for next week?  Sarah vs the family again?  I cannot wait.  Such good soap.

Coronation Street  (U.K.)

I have a bad feeling when this is all said and done, Todd is going to wind up holding the bag for this scam and no one will believe he was trying to protect his mother from Vinny. Beyond that, there’s not much to say.  I’m glad Todd and Billy are on the right track again.

Deep Water (Australia)

Despite the subject matter, I don’t think this show is nearly as compelling or dramatic as it could be.  Everything is too subdued and underplayed when things could be pumped up a bit.  I don’t know if it’s because it’s based on a real crime and the show wants to stick to the facts or that’s the style the show was going for.   To be fair, it does capture the darkness and the moodiness very well. And I do like the psychological and emotional underpinnings to Tori and Nick’s involvement with the case.

vlcsnap-2016-10-10-12h01m58s149

Still, I would have liked to have seen a bit more creative license and add drama.  Maybe some romance for the characters?  The acting is pretty good though.  And you know, I was confused by Tori’s relationship with her gay friend or maybe I wasn’t paying attention.  He is her son’s father or what?  I didn’t quite get that whole thing.  Maybe the show will clear it up.

I did like the plot arc of the former football player who finally had to face the past he’d been running from.   Didn’t expect he’d be murdered though.  Oh and the plot arc of the bipolar suspect was intriguing too, especially the plight of his possibly being returned to Iran.

Days of Our Lives (U.S.)

So silly to have the Kiriakis’ running the empire from their living room with most of the action taking place off screen.  All that macho posturing with Brady and Philip was more funny than anything else.  I guess everybody loves Demois now and have forgotten he tortured and killed Bo.

Why would Sonny think that pleading to Chad not to take over the business based on their friendship would mean anything given the number of times Chad has screwed Sonny over already?  Or does Sonny still not know that Chad purposefully destroyed his club?

paul

Is Paul really conducting surveillance of John’s trying to rescue the kidnap victims in the middle of a busy restaurant?  I guess someone else was using the office set that day.   I do think Paul and Sonny still have chemistry.  That last scene between them was nice.  But the show is still dragging things out and finding silly (or non-existent) reasons for them not to be together.

General Hospital celebrates Halloween this week and it’s going to be one hell of a ride! With a wedding and possible kidnapping on the horizon, just what kind of madness will our Port Charles favorites have to endure?

Halloween has become a special time of the year for GH since head writer Ron Carlivati came on board. In 2012, the return of AJ began with him lurking around town in a mask. Last year, Robin escaped captivity at Wyndemere to attend the Halloween party at the hospital, where she ran into daughter Emma, husband Patrick and his then-fiancée Sabrina; Julian put the moves on Carly and the push-pull of Nikolas, Britt and Elizabeth further complicated their tension.

This year, Halloween lays the groundwork for a series of big story points that lead into November sweeps. Sam and Patrick’s fun night with their children takes a downturn when Sam learns bad news about Danny. Will Silas come up with another protocol to save Sam’s son? Will the family crisis lead to a reunion for Julian and Alexis?

Franco puts forth his plan to destroy Sonny and Carly by not only revealing their affair, but Sonny’s role in the murder of AJ Quartermaine. Meanwhile, Nina hunts Ava Jerome with plans to steal her baby. Morgan confronts Sonny about Ava and a major secret is revealed.

It’s a week not to miss!
