Making her soap opera debut at the end of April on the iTV/BritBox serial Coronation Street, newcomer Mollie Winnard quickly garnered herself a place on the cobbles as she found herself smackdab in the middle of the teen scene when her character Kayla Westbrook was revealed to be the daughter of child abuser Neil Clifton (Ben Cartwright). TV Source Magazine recently spoke with the new soap star discussing her characters’ motivation, future, and what it’s like to portray such emotional scenes.

Being the daughter of an accused pedophile, especially one who was as highly regarded as Neil was within the police force isn’t something that Winnard’s character Kayla finds easy to deal with.  “She is a daddy’s girl; her dad is her whole world.”  Thus, when Neil’s appeal is rejected Kayla’s entire world comes crashing down. That is the moment that everything switches for her. At first, she was just trying to gather information for the appeal but the minute that the appeal is rejected, and her dad says to her, ‘I am going to die in prison,’ that is when she makes the decision that she will do whatever it takes to protect her dad.”

Thus, it’s in that moment that Kayla’s plan to manipulate Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) and prove that Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) is lying about everything is once again set in motion.  “Her plan is back on. She believes that Craig knows that Bethany has lied about Kayla’s dad, Neil, and that he can’t cope with that and that is what has triggered his OCD, so she is trying to bring it back up.”

“She tells Craig she loves him, and she sleeps with him to make him feel this attachment towards her. She is definitely messing with Craig,” teases the actress. But that isn’t to say that Kayla doesn’t understand what her actions are doing.  “She feels bad for sleeping with Craig because she isn’t doing it for love, she knows what she is doing. She has spent a lot of time with him and knows he’s not a bad lad, he’s a lovely person, but it’s sheer desperation.” It’s at that point that she believes her character feels guilty about her actions. “When she is leaving Craig’s house, the morning after she has slept with him, she is almost in tears and she just wants to give up, but she keeps on driving because the love for her dad makes it all worth it and she keeps reminding herself of that to get her through.”

Winnard says she feel she feels she’s surprised at how far she is prepared to go. “She is learning more about herself and what she is capable of along the way.  But she is scared because if anyone was to find out who she really is, she loses everything.” If the residents of Weatherfield aren’t afraid, maybe they should be. “Craig, Bethany and anyone who gets in her way is in danger. She is risking a lot and it is such a dangerous game that she is playing so anything could happen,” exclaims the actress.

With that said, Winnard find ways to unwind after playing such highly emotional scenes. “I am quite a giddy person naturally. When it’s a scene where I have been crying a lot, I go on to my girl’s group chat which makes me upbeat and happy because everyone is constantly sending memes or I’ll eat chocolate, that’s always a good way.”

When it comes to playing a character as complex as Kayla, the actress says getting to do a lot is the best part. “She is a fun character to play because she has gone from being bubbly to crying to full of rage, it’s great to play such variety to her.”

Coronation Street airs double episodes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on iTV in the UK with Same Day episodes airing immediately after on BritBox in the United States, with episodes rebroadcasting on Hulu at a two-week delay.

In this week’s Gays Of Our Lives….

  • We take a look at the BBC mini-series The Man in The Orange Shirt, which features two love stories: one set shortly after World War II and the other in present day.  It shows again why the Brits always do it better.
  • Lofty and Dom have their first kiss on Holby City — and it doesn’t go well.  Is it over for these two before it begins?
  • There’s a new gay in town on Shortland Street and he has his eye on Jack.  Jack can barely handle Darryl and Charlie, is he ready for a third?
  • Easy tries to decide if he’s ready to have sex with a man for the first time on Unter Uns. But will tragedy get in the way of passion?
  • Aaron and David have barely gotten together before Aaron says ‘I love you’.  Will David say it back on Neighbours?
  • Aaron and Robert are split and Lawrence and Ronnie are on the rocks on Emmerdale.   Can either couple survive?

All this and more!

Emmerdale  (U.K.)

I figured with the entire Home Farm family leaving the show (except for Rebecca — at least until she gives birth) that Lawrence and Ronnie wouldn’t be getting a happy ending.  Their goodbye scenes were wonderfully acted and I guess Ronnie would have forgiven Lawrence (again) if it weren’t for Lawrence’s attack.  What is it about tv gay men where they’ll forgive their lovers any transgression?

I’ll miss Ronnie and I wish the show would have given he and Lawrence’s relationship more airtime and focus, especially since we never get to see older gay men on television.  When it started they had intimacy issues, but the show never really addressed them and then dropped the story thread altogether.  So much more could have been done with them if only the show would have bothered.

Lachlan continues to be a stupid psychopath by kidnapping Tim and keeping him on the Home Farm property.  Did he really think he could get away with it?  Hopefully we don’t have to hear anymore about Chrissie’s father though now that the whole story is out.  The show has never really handled this story well and I wonder if they never had a plan and were making it up as they go along.

I find Adam and Paddy’s being judgemental of Robert to be a bit much given that they both were unfaithful to their wives.  I can’t believe Robert hasn’t pointed that out.  Adam even thought he fathered another Vanessa’s baby — which Victoria forgave him for.

I do think it’s good that Aaron and Robert have broken up.  I’m sure they’ll get back together, but they needed the break after everything.  I’m glad scheming Robert is back though.  That’s the best Robert.  On the other hand, Aaron’s family antics are really boring.  He needs to do something, a real storyline like Robert has.

Holby City  (U.S.)

Does anybody really think that Lofty and Dom will stay just friends? There’s no way all that would have happened thus far for them to wind up only being BFF’s.   And Lofty looked regretful when he didn’t respond to Dom’s kiss.  This is just a bump on the road as they find each other.  Lofty didn’t respond to Dom for a reason, maybe he’s afraid of ruining the friendship?  He obviously have his own issues with relationships.  I guess at some point we’ll find out what they are.

My guess is Dom will move on, perhaps start dating someone new and Lofty will realize he has to admit his feelings or lose Dom.   It’s really no surprise this happened, it’s far too soon for them to get together.   Dom is still recovering from his abusive relationship with Isaac and Lofty looks as if he had his own things to work out as well.  But I do think we’re headed for a really sweet, but emotionally messy romance.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

Okay, so Harry and James slept together the night Amy died?  Why does James care about that staying a secret?  He’s single. I’m puzzled about that.

Harry’s constant, endless whining about Ste is so pathetic.  It’s really unfortunate how this character doesn’t exist other than to be a prop for Ste and his problems.  I like that James is the only one who sees it, but he’s got his own agenda wanting Ste gone.  I hope Ste and Harry never get married, but they probably will.  And then Ste will cheat on Harry (with Ryan, of course).  Rinse, wash, repeat.

Ste stopped taking his HIV meds because he didn’t want people to know he was positive, but what would happen if he were to get sick?  Wouldn’t the other convicts find out then?  Makes no sense.

It is too bad that Scott and Damon are brothers.  They actually do have chemistry.  I like the strange little triangle between Scott, Damon and Brody as they both angle for Damon’s (platonic) affections.  But I need for Scott to not revert back to his old ways.  That’s what made the character so unpalatable before.

Leela should never forgive that idiot Zack for leaving her baby in a locked car, even if he thought it was for a minute.  Nope.  Never.

I know it’s sounds odd to say on a show with so many gay/bi men, but this show needs more.  Too many of them are single and there’s no one for them to sleep with that they haven’t been with already.

PICKS AND PANS

Casualty  (U.K.)

So Jez is going to be the one to turn Scott in?  That won’t go well.   Clearly the truth will come out.  Will Mickey dump Scott over his betrayal?  Or will Mickey suffer the consequences from what Jez has done *and* the reveal of his affair with Jez?  Mickey is truly afraid his brother would kill him if he knew the truth.   This is going to end badly of course.

I know Mickey’s stint on the show is winding down, I just hope it doesn’t end up with Mickey dead.   Whatever happens, Mickey and Jez won’t have a happy ending.  Mickey is a minor character on a limited run so one way or another, it’s going to be over very soon.  But no dead gays please.

I do wish this story had been more about Jez and Mickey’s relationship instead of all the other storylines surrounding it and we’d seen more of them.

As for Ethan and Alicia, Ethan might be a little obsessed, but his brother was brutally murdered and the killer did get away with it.  Most people wouldn’t and couldn’t just let it go.  I don’t think Alicia is being very understanding giving him ultimatums.  If she really loved him, she’d be a lot more supportive than she has been, if only to be there for him when it all blows up in his face.  Sometimes, that’s the best thing you can do for a person you know is headed for a fall.

Coronation Street  (U.K.)

The show is, frankly, being super manipulative with Todd’s sudden turn on a dime about Summer.  It would be much more interesting if Todd hadn’t budged about being a father, but we couldn’t have a gay man who doesn’t want kids, period, could we?

And I don’t want to pick on a kid, but that girl playing Summer is a bland little thing who has no screen presence.  It’s only going to make it more awful watching a story centered on her.

Todd had no way to get Summer’s address other than to enter a business deal with Adam?  So contrived.  There’s a dozen ways he could have learned the girl’s address.  The church would have had it since they hosted Drew’s funeral, right?   He could have gotten it from there.

I mean I want Adam and Todd to work together, but the way of doing it completely stupid.  That said, Adam is so hot.  I’d love for he and Todd to have an affair.  It’ll never happen, but they’ve got chemistry and it would be a fun story.  Oh well….

And why isn’t Todd telling Billy about Summer?  I’m sure it’s being done for dramatic reasons, but it actually makes no sense.  There’s no reason for Todd not tell Billy.  More contrivances.

Days of Our Lives  (U.S.)

I haven’t watched Days in awhile, but with the new writing about to start, I figured I should get in tune with the stories.

Not much has changed.  Still awful writing.  This Demois murder is terribly done.  Sonny’s flashbacks and his ‘Oh my God’ was hilarious.  I don’t think the show was going for that.

We know Sonny or JJ didn’t do it since they both have confessed.

I still hate the Sonny the businessman story.  It’s a bad idea for Sonny and I just don’t buy this arc for the character.  And if I’m honest, Freddie Smith can’t pull it off.

Well, at least Sonny is still a fairly decent guy.  He did the right thing about the murder.  His keeping quiet would have been too far gone.

But the show has removed any sort of suspense by constantly repeating that whoever did it was drugged so they’ll never be prosecuted.  So we’ll have months of ‘drama’ with the conclusion forgone already.  Let’s hope Ron ends this story or fixes it.  Something!

Gabi’s booty looked fantastic in that blue skirt.   Camila Banus is a truly stunning young woman.  But then, since that’s what I fixated on during a dramatic scene, that tells you how entertaining this story is.

Nashville  (U.S.)

I’m not feeling Will and Zach.  They’ve never worked for me as a couple.  I don’t think they have chemistry and Zach is both boring and unlikeable.   While, Jakob is a fun character and he and Will are hot together.  Curious why the show won’t go there with them.  They are really wasting the marvelous Murray Bartlett with this throwaway character.

I agree with Will.  What Zach did was horrible and cruel.  It’s probably not the first time Zach has dumped somebody like that.  And it probably won’t be the last.

In this week’s Gays of Our Lives, babies and children are on the minds of a few of our favorite gays…

  • On People of the Valley, Iolo and Tyler finally decide to have a baby and they get a offer from their pal Kelly to carry a child for them.  Will they agree?
  • Todd and Billy want to play daddy to pre-teen Summer on Coronation Street, but Summer’s homophobe grandma has something to say about it.  Todd, however, has a scheme that could solve their problem… or make things worse.
  • Andrew just had a baby with his wife on RedWater, but all he can think about is his incestuous love for his cousin Keiron.  Is Andrew ready to leave his family behind for who he really loves?
  • Johnny gets a lesson in gay history on EastEnders, but has the show forgotten it’s own history?
  • Drugs and parties are becoming a habit for Jack on Shortland Street and when Jack’s boyfriend Charlie wants up the ante and add a third to their relationship, will Jack go for it?

All this and more!

Coronation Street  (U.K.)

How convenient that Todd is so quickly turned around on raising Summer.  But I guess it’s to be expected.  The show said they’d get the kid and I’m curious to see how it comes about at this point.  Unless Drew legally spelled out somewhere that Billy and Todd were to take the girl, they don’t have much legal standing and even then the grandma would probably sue for custody.  I’m still not sold on this story.  I just think there are so many other stories for Todd and Billy or any gay couple for that matter, that don’t involve children.

EastEnders  (U.K.)

I get what the show was trying to do with Johnny and Derek, but they went about it all wrong.  Derek doesn’t know Johnny and he had no right to attack Johnny like that.  What was Johnny supposed to do?  Make a bad situation about ten times worse?  I know the show wanted to inform the viewers what the elder gays went through but it came off as preachy.

And since when did Mick tell Johnny to walk away from anything?  He’s always taught his kids to fight for what they believe in.  That whole bit seemed to be written for the story they are telling today not the history of the show.

And even though Ben was around, through out all of Johnny and Derek’s interactions Johnny never mentioned that gays still have it tough in some respects and that a friend of his was brutally murdered by gay bashers?

Is this the start of an actual story for Johnny?  He’s been on the show for over a year now and still nothing.  Let’s hope the show’s new regime changes that.  I like Ben realizing it’s time he move on with his life.  He’s young, Paul has been dead for a while.  And like Johnny, Ben needs a story.  I’d like to see something for Derek too, as long as I’m asking.

Why does Johnny always look startled?  And could somebody dress this boy?  He dresses like he’s middle aged, not a twenty-something.

Holby City  (U.K.)

So the show basically told us this past week that Dom and Lofty will get together, but they’ll have a long, slow burn of a romance.  I’m okay with that.  Dom doesn’t need to rush into anything so soon after Isaac.  I think they’ll be really sweet together though, their scenes together so far are quite lovely.    Besides, only someone who thought of you in ‘that way’, even if they hadn’t realized it yet, would be so thoughtful to do what Lofty did for Dom with the puzzle.  That bit when they shared during that awkward hug after Dom apologized to Lofty was cute.

Neighbours  (Australia)

I did like Aaron saying ‘this sucks for everyone’ to Tom about the romantic dilemma they were all in.  That was a very real moment.  But the hug and David seeing it was so contrived.  I’m glad Aaron told David off for assuming the worst of him (again).

Like Aaron pointed out, he’s a ‘what you see is what you get’ kind of guy.  David should know that by now.  I’m ready for the misunderstandings between Aaron and David to come to an end though.  It’s time to put them together and give them some couple drama to deal with.

I suspect that Aaron and Mishti will wind up buying the gym.  I think it’s the perfect business for Aaron.  It’s long past time he had some success in that department.

In this week’s edition of Gays of Our Lives…..

  • Jack and Charlie return for a new story arc on Shortland Street as Jack turns to drugs to cope with the pressures of school. Will he become addicted?  Of course he will!
  • On RedWater, the kissing cousins go all the way, giving new meaning to ‘keeping it in the family’. But I have a question about their tryst.  What could it be?
  • Iolo gets a blast from the past on People of the Valley when a character not seen in years comes back into his life.
  • Todd is angry when Billy makes a huge decision about their future and leaves Todd out of the equation on Coronation Street.
  • Hollyoaks tackles the relevant issue of suicide among the gay community.  But did they take the right angle?

All this — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Coronation Street (U.K.)

Todd looked yummy in those tight jeans, coming and going.

I’ve said from the start that I didn’t like this storyline and I still don’t.  I think it was awful for Billy to tell Drew they’d take Summer without discussing it with Todd.  It’s unfair and wrong.  And if I were Todd I’d be gone.  What I really hate about this story is the undercurrent that Todd is selfish for not wanting to take in a child he has no ties to.  Why should he?  What’s wrong with people just not wanting children no matter who they are?

And we know how this is going to turn out.  The girl will come and live with Todd and Billy, they’ll have some bumps and bruises, but they’ll turn out to be a happy family.   I’m sure we’ll get dialogue from Todd like: ‘what was wrong with me?  How could I ever not want to be a father?’   Blech.

It would be far more interesting and real if this tore them apart.  I guess I just hate the soap opera trope that always sticks gay characters with kids in the belief that’s all everybody really wants — when not everybody does.   And there’s nothing wrong with that.

I can think of a dozen stories for a gay couple that don’t involve cheating or children.  Shame the show couldn’t be more imaginative.

Emmerdale  (U.K.)

This drug storyline for Finn and Ross is dumb.  My guess they’ll be the worst drug dealers ever.

I had to laugh when Robert talked about Victoria having self-respect and that’s why she wouldn’t go back to that idiot Adam.  Cuz if Aaron had any self-respect he would have already kicked Robert to the curb.  Ross is right.  What does Robert have to do for Aaron to walk away? Forget Robert getting Becs pregnant, not even attempted murder is enough to keep Aaron coming back for more.

So Robert is going to pay because he said something mean to Aaron, not because Ross shot Robert last year?  Or all the other awful things they’ve done to each other?  Okay.  If the show wants these two to have a war, make it about something important.

Not sure what to think of this new Lawrence story arc.  But I find it hard to buy that Lawrence would go on the radio and give an interview.  That doesn’t seem like his style.  I did like he and Ronnie teaming up to handle Rakesh though.

Holby City  (U.K.)

Well that didn’t take long.  In fact, it seems rather sudden given last week’s episodes.  Was Lofty touched by Dom’s monologue about his friendship with Arthur because otherwise I don’t see where this crush came from.  And Lofty clearly has a crush on Dom given the dreamy looks he shot his way.   Even the little girl could see it!  I have a feeling though that Dom isn’t going to feel the same way and will reject Lofty.  After all, Dom is still recovering from his messy relationship with Isaac.  It’s way too soon for a new lover.  But I’m guessing it’s the first step of an eventual relationship between them.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

Wow.  Hollyoaks proved me wrong.  I had my doubts about this suicide storyline, especially as it featured Scott, a character I’ve never liked.  But they knocked it out of the park.  The writing and the acting, especially by Ross Adams as Scott, was stellar.  The tape that Scott made before his decision to try and kill himself, was so sad and heartbreaking and powerful.   We saw a lifetime of Scott’s disappointment and heartbreak, which has played out over the past couple of years, crystallized in that moment.   Killing yourself never makes sense or is the answer, but we get why Scott would do it.  Kudos to the actor for playing a range of emotions in a very long scene where he had no one to play off but the camera.  Wow.

I thought Diane’s reaction was very realistic.  At first she refused to believe it and then she was angry at Scott for doing it.  Still, Diane clearly doesn’t understand.

I’m glad the show took the time to point out how prevalent suicide is among the gay community.  And did I mention how cool is it they have a gay muslim in the cast?

I also liked that the show addressed that even among other gays it’s hard to be femme and flamboyant because not only does the straight folks reject you, but the gay community does as well.   So much of that rang true.  James’ scene with Mercedes where he talked about be forced to be ‘straight-acting’ was strong.

I do hope we get to see Scott grow and change and be more fleshed out after this story.  And I hope he does find love, someone who accepts him the way he is.  Can’t believe I’m saying that about a character I’ve always wanted gone.

I’d forgotten that Esther tried to kill herself back in the day.   Glad the show didn’t forget that history.

I’m tired of Harry whining about Ste.  So very tired.

Why is it in these closet case stories the guy in the closet ends up smacking his secret lover around?  This show has done it before, too many soaps have done it before.  I’m tired of it.  I’m even more tired of gay men continuing to pursue these jerks and fans cheering this crap on.  I hope that this doesn’t wind up with Kyle and Ryan back together once the secret is out and Kyle is out of jail.  But I wouldn’t put it past this show to go there. Just once I want to see the other guy pop his closeted lover back. Please!

  • Jez pressures Mickey to come out to his family on Casualty, but there could be bigger problems when an attack lands Mickey in the hospital, leading to a confrontation between Mickey’s brother Scott (who murdered Ethan’s brother Cal) and Ethan.
  • On River City, Stevie realizes his mother knows he’s HIV, but her bigger concern is that he hasn’t told Robbie about his condition. And things take an ugly turn when Scarlett attempts to tell Robbie herself.
  • Finn and Ross become drug dealers on Emmerdale, but Ross’ war with Robert and Aaron could put the business in jeopardy.
  • Dom’s drug addiction spins out of control on Holby City and Lofty comes to his rescue.  A friendship blossoms between the two of them, but will it lead to more?

All this, plus more clips, spoilers and teasers!

PICKS AND PANS

Casualty  (U.K.)

I know Scott is a racist murderer, but his ass looked sweet in those tight jeans.  Damn.

I found much of the events of this episode to be kind of unbelievable.  Just for their own protection, the hospital Ethan wouldn’t have been allowed to treat Mickey.  Too much liability.   The subplot with the Middle Eastern woman and her daughter was so heavy handed and pointless.  It just seemed like a distraction to all the truly tense dramas playing out.  I think the show would have been better served to go with a completely unrelated story.  But it was nice to see the young woman who played Phoebe on Hollyoaks.   I liked her.  Still annoys me that HO killed her like they did.

I also, given the history, can’t believe Scott can just walk around the hospital like he did.  Security can and should have thrown him out.  I guess the story isn’t over yet.  I don’t think Ethan is going to let this go.  And well, Scott has some big ones given the attitude he showed in this clip.

Does Mickey really believe that Scott is innocent or is he covering for his brother?   And I wish we were seeing more of Mickey and Jez as a couple.  We’re clearly supposed to believe they care deeply for each other.   But I’d like to know why Jez would take such a huge risk with his life and at work to date someone who brings so much baggage to the table.  Mickey’s cute and all, but what else does he bring to the table besides a great head of hair?

Clearly the show is setting up for a major explosion with the reveal of Mickey being gay, his relationship with a black man and the truth about Scott having killed Cal.  And I just don’t see this ending well for anybody involved.

Emmerdale  (U.K.)

What is this show doing with the Barton family?  They used to have great stories for them, especially Ross, but Emmerdale really seems to have lost interest in doing anything good with them.  Both Finn and Ross are still oddly single and Pete is involved in the dumbest love triangle.  Terrible.

Who doesn’t check their account regularly?  Nobody in this day and age.  I find it very hard to believe Emma hasn’t looked at her account since James died.  Nope.  In fact, none of these people are checking their business or personal accounts on a regular basis.  There are other ways to tell this story without making everyone seem dumb.  Then again, given that this plot point is so out the blue, probably not.

Leyla was totally out of line breaking Finn’s confidence.  I’d never trust her with anything.

Finn turning to prostitution to make money could be an interesting storyline with all sorts of drama and complications.  Too bad the show chose not to pursue it.  It would be a lot better than what they are choosing to do.

I liked the scene where Ross came to Finn’s rescue, but finding a drug empire in their backyard?  Please.  And Ross talked about not doing something stupid, but trying to cash in on a situation like this asks for the foolishness they’re about to put themselves in.  I mean, do they really think these dealers won’t come back for their stuff?

Holby City  (U.K.)

Seems to me we’ve seen more of Dom’s grieving Arthur than we have had of Morven doing the same.  But then the show always spent more time on Dom and Arthur’s relationship than they did with Arthur and Morven.  I always kind of felt like his relationship with her was thrown in without a lot of thought.

Could the show be more obvious that they’re going to pair Dom and Lofty?  These scenes are designed to go in that direction, especially with Dom saying things like ‘we’re never going to mean anything to each other.’  If that’s not the start of a love story I don’t know what is.

I’m not sure how I feel about it.  I can’t see much chemistry between the two guys yet.  And it would be nice if the show wouldn’t pair them simply because they’re the only two gay men on the canvas.   But TV doesn’t work that way.  So it’s inevitable.  Lofty certainly is different from Dom’s previous lovers so there’s that.  I just hope the show takes their time and doesn’t rush it.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

I really don’t care about Ste or his problems.  I wish he would go away and disappear for good.   How can he keep having violent blackouts, but he’s sure he didn’t kill Amy?  But I did like Darren’s Wentworth Miller comment.  Tony did the right thing by calling the cops on Ste.  Harry is willing to throw his life away for this loser and thank God Tony stopped him.  Tony should have never approved of this relationship in the first place.  Everything Tony warned Harry about a relationship with Ste turned out to be right.

So is Ryan in denial about his bisexuality?  That’s how it comes across.  Or is there more to it?  I’m confused about that plot point.

Scott needs to butt out of things that don’t concern him.  This is one of the many, many things I don’t like about this character.

Did Harry really think turning the drug dealers (while Ste is still in jail) was a good idea?  What did he think would happen?

I love that on the same episode where Esther and Kim break up, a new lesbian lands in town and there’s an instant triangle.   LOL!   But isn’t it completely inappropriate for Farah to be dating her patient’s ex-wife?  I mean, there are no rules against it, I guess.  But still…!  Oh well, at least Hollyoaks keeps bringing on new gays and lesbians and treats it like it’s no big deal.

This week in Gays of Our Lives…..

  • Aaron and Robert are back on Emmerdale and so is the drama.  Robert confesses to Aaron that he slept with Rebecca and maybe got her pregnant.  Can Aaron forgive Robert this time?
  • Lofty faces his past on Holby City when his ex-fiance and her brother show up at the hospital.  It isn’t long before it’s revealed that Lofty was romantically involved with the siblings and he has to deal with his feelings.
  • Iolo loses his temper and attacks Chester on People of the Valley.  When it’s caught on tape, will Iolo find himself in trouble with the law?
  • Rhys and David are confronted about their affair on Rownd a Rownd.  Will they finally come clean?  While, Rhys comes to a decision about his impending court trial.
  • Robbie’s drug addiction spins out of control on River City and when he gets sexually involved with Stevie who is supplying his drugs, things get much, much worse.

All this — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Casualty  (U.K.)

The show really isn’t giving Jez and Mickey much airtime, but I’m enjoying what we’ve seen of them.  They have some really nice chemistry and it’s clear they are building to a climax of the reveal that Scott did kill Cal and Scott’s bigoted family finding out that Mickey is gay and dating a black guy.  I do wish we were seeing more of them though.  It would be much easier to invest in their relationship if we got to watch it play out in full on screen.  But, it’s nice to see Jez so smitten.  The look on his face when Mickey said he wasn’t breaking up with him was lovely.

I also enjoyed the subplot with Elle and the sexy cop.  I appreciate that the show had him shirtless for most of his scenes.  I hope we get a romance with them.

Coronation Street  (U.K.)

Well, if we didn’t know it already, we know for sure Todd will agree to adopt Summer.  There’s no story if he doesn’t.  I’m glad Audrey talked to Billy and made him realize how unfair he was being to Todd.  It was nice getting things from Todd’s point of view without Todd coming off as selfish.  But it’s pretty clear the guys will end up being parents.  And I still say it’s a lazy, lazy story for them.  I’m sure this girl will be an awful brat, making this story even more tiresome to watch.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

Finally, the truth revealed.  Well, at least it’s all out in the open now and this ‘drugging’ story, which was all over the place, is finally over.   It dragged on for far too long and Mac should have figured out what was going on before it came to this.  I can’t believe Marnie wants to still be with Mac after all this and that she expects he would come back.  Then again, they probably will get together again.  They’re as sick as the other and enjoy their messy, dysfunctional relationship.

As for James, he does have power of attorney and he’s unlikely to give it up.  I think though this will probably blow up in his face.  The truth is what James really wants his father’s love and acceptance and he’ll never get that.  The sooner he faces that, the better off he’ll be.

Holby City  (U.K.)

I vaguely remember Lofty when he was on Casualty.  I think he was on the same time as that gay nurse Jamie, right?  At the time, there was speculation about Lofty’s sexuality since he was never paired with any women.  At least I don’t recall that he was.  Anywhere, here he is on HC and we’ll soon learn he was engaged to be married, but it ended when he had an affair with his fiance’s brother.  How soapy!

I guess the question is whether he’s gay or bi.  And of course is the show going to pair him with Dom?  Lofty is a sweet, caring guy and Dom needs someone like that after two abusive relationships.  The show is already playing it that Dom doesn’t like Lofty, so maybe it’s the start of a romance between them.  I guess we’ll find out.

Neighbours  (Australia)

I actually thought David and Will had a bit of chemistry and that kiss was really sweet.  I like that David is eager but nervous when it comes to men.  It’s realistic.  We’ve all been where he is.  But Aaron was out of line for warning Will away.  David is going to have to deal with his own bumps and bruises when it comes to men.  I suspect this will only make things worse between Aaron and David.

That flowered shirt Aaron had on in the final scene with Will looked hot on him.  Like I said before, this show knows how to dress Aaron.  He dresses like a good looking young gay man with a face and body like his would.  His clothes are always on point.

Aaron is stripping again?  Did the show forget Aaron was a terrible stripper?  He couldn’t dance and the show is so conservative we never actually saw Aaron in more than just his shirt off during his performances.  I agree Aaron needs to find a new career path but let’s hope this one doesn’t last long.

It’s a lite week this as many TV gays seem to be on vacation or in Days of our Lives’ case I ain’t watching until the new writing kicks in.  At any rate, here’s what’s up in this week’s column….

  • Aaron learns that David did hear Aaron’s confession of his feelings, but when a new man enters David’s life, will Aaron have made his move too late?  Find out on Neighbours.
  • On Coronation Street, as Drew draws closer to death, Billy learns that his godchild Summer faces an uncertain future, forcing Todd to reconsider his ‘no children’ stance.
  • James’ scheme to destroy his father causes Mac to have a stroke on Hollyoaks.  But James is only starting in his quest for revenge.
  • Jac plans to confront David about his affair with Rhys on Rownd a Rownd.  Will David finally come clean with Dani?
  • Plus, teasers and spoilers on Emmerdale, Holby City, Days of our Lives — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Neighbours  (Australia)

The show really waited a full week to tell us that David didn’t have brain damage and that he did hear what Aaron said regarding his feelings for David?  That seems like strange pacing.  I did like that David realized because of his flirtation with Will that he needed to get out there and meet other guys and ‘see how this works’.   It was a surprise but as I’ve said before, I’m enjoying that the show is taking their time with the romance.  It makes Aaron and David more rootable if they have to work for it.

Paul really had all these off screen conversations about David’s love life?  It would have been nice to have seen some of this, but I did like the talk between David and Paul.  I’m enjoying their bonding and getting to know each other.  I suspect that we’re building to David starting to call Paul ‘Dad’.   I think I’ll like that.

Rownd a Rownd (Wales)

So both Erin’s father and his cop girlfriend she was going out drinking using a fake ID and they said nothing to stop her?  I mean, John even knew Erin was going to get drunk and just accepted it.  Not to mention Wil drinking alone at home.  I guess the culture there is very different.

Then again, kids here do the same thing in this country, but it’s just ‘hidden’.  But I did like the reveal that Erin was really upset and worried about Wil and Rhys’ legal problems and the effect it has on the family.  I know the show plays her as this nasty bitch and she is, but it’s great she genuinely cares about her family and is troubled she can’t help them.  Makes her a real person and not a one note character.

As for Jac and Lowri and their fretting about telling Dani, the truth is they shouldn’t tell her anything.  It is not their place.  They can and should talk to David and get the whole story and push him to tell her.  But they really shouldn’t be the ones to spill.

THIS WEEK IN SPOILERS

Coronation Street:  Billy finds out that Drew is getting sicker and he’s worried about Summer.  When it’s revealed that after Drew dies, Summer might end up in a foster home, Billy grows more concerned about the girl’s future, forcing Todd to reconsider his position about not taking on the girl.

Days Of Our Lives:  In Greece, Sonny and Paul get closer to tracking down Demois.

Holby City:   Following the end of his abusive relationship with Isaac, Dom has been taking some time off from work.  But he’s back and despite his denials, his co-workers can see how emotionally fragile he is.  Dom’s first patient since his return is a test of how troubled he is and he may have returned back to work too soon.

Hollyoaks:  As Mac grows more ill, James pushes Marnie to get him to sign a power of attorney, so she can run his businesses while he recovers.  Mac refuses to do so and decides to get a second opinion.  Before he can do that, however, he has a stroke and is rushed to the hospital.  Marnie fears she and James’ scheme to destroy Mac is about to be exposed and wants to stop.  James, however, threatens to tell Mac what they’ve have been doing unless she continues the plan.  Things take another turn when Mac has another stroke.

Neighbours:  David is surprised when Will asks him out on a date, given what happened between them.  Still, David agrees to go.   Meanwhile, Aaron tries to improve his career prospects.

Rownd a Rownd:   David looks to find a way to get out of Dani’s plans for a romantic getaway.  But he’s got bigger problems when Jac confronts him about his affair with Rhys.

TEASERS FOR NEXT WEEK

Days of Our Lives:  Sonny and Paul find themselves stranded on an island.

Emmerdale:  Aaron and Robert return home from their trip; Lawrence wants to know the truth.

Hollyoaks:  Kyle’s secret is revealed; Harry pursues a clue that could help Ste.

Neighbours: David is enjoying his romance with Will; an ex-lover of Aaron’s returns.

Rownd a Rownd:  As Dani’s health improves, David steels himself to tell her he’s gay.

That’s it for this edition of Gays of Our Lives.   Please share your comments on the thoughts and opinions expressed in this week’s column below.  See you next week!
