If every writer has to tiptoe to make sure the black women gets the man, the white character pays for something that same character would have gotten away with if it was to another white character, it’s not worth having black characters on the show. Too much racism from the viewers; too many complaints. Instead of escapism it’s become a race thing. And I’m not a white Protestant which is the type of background most soap characters have been for decades. But THOSE are the characters I watched, and didn’t think about what religion they were; I just got into the show. Now? Now that the shows are increasing their black characters, I just find it annoying that they’re basically the ONLY diversity the shows have. And it’s become a thing: the gorgeous white male has to fall for the black woman, then we have to hear the black viewers actually boast about it, or protest if she loses him because it “must be because she’s black.” That’s your insecurity; you see things that are not written into the show. And so the writers are your prisoners; held captive for fear of being called racist. They have to make sure the interracial couple stays together; make sure the white character pays if they committed a crime against the black character. That’s not a soap; that’s people with grievances holding writers hostage.
