As previously reported, the nominations for the 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards were announced live on CBS’ The Talk at 2:00 pm today. Following the broadcast, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) today announced the full list of nominees. The awards ceremony will be held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites on Sunday, May 1st.

The Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will also be held at the Bonaventure on Friday, April 29th, 2016. The 43rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award Nominations were revealed today on the Emmy-winning show, “The Talk,” on CBS.

“After last year’s critically successful Daytime telecast, it is with great disappointment that The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announces that there will not be a broadcast of the 43rd Annual Daytime Emmy ® Awards,” said Bob Mauro, President. “After months of negotiations to find show sponsorship, the NATAS Executive Board has decided that the current climate for awards shows prohibits the possibility of a telecast this year. With that said, we will be putting on a world-class awards celebration honoring the best and brightest of Daytime television and look forward to an exciting show. All efforts regarding returning the annual gala to television in 2017 are underway.”

“We are especially grateful for our passionate Daytime fans and are looking forward to producing a grand gala that honors the talents and artistries of all the professionals that represent Daytime television,” said David Michaels, SVP, Daytime Emmy Awards.

Last year’s Executive Producer, Michael Levitt of Michael Levitt Productions has, again, signed on as Executive Producer of the 43rdAnnual Daytime Emmy Awards. Mike Rothman will also serve as Executive Producer.

The Daytime Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production and are presented to individuals and programs broadcast from 2:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. during the 2015 calendar year.

The Young and the Restless leads the soap pack with 27 overall nominations, including outstanding drama series, writing team, directing and all acting categories. General Hospital comes in second with 24 nominations. CBS leads the networks with 77 total nominations.

Executive producer Frank Valentini announced today that Daytime Emmy award winning actresses Finola Hughes and Genie Francis will continue lending their talents to daytime drama General Hospital . The veteran soap stars are best known for the popular roles of Agent Anna Devane and Laura Spencer.

Hughes began her soap career on General Hospital in 1985 playing then super spy Anna DeVane, a role she also played on All My Children as well as General Hospital: Night Shift. In addition to GH, Hughes has numerous television and film roles on her resume including Charmed, Blossom, Pacific Palisades, Soapdish, Staying Alive and Like Crazy. In 2013, she directed and executive produced the film The Bet, winning a LA Femme Filmmaker Award for Best Feature. Hughes won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1991.

Francis came into instant stardom playing the role of Laura Spencer on General Hospital, which she took over in 1977. She is most noted as one half of super couple of Luke and Laura. Luke and Laura’s wedding on November 17, 1981 drew 30 million viewers, turning the episode into the highest-rated hour in soap opera history. In addition to GH, Francis has also starred as Diana Colville on Days of our Lives, Ceara Connor Hunter on All My Children and Genevieve Atkinson on The Young and the Restless. She is also noted for her role as Brett Main Hazard in the popular television mini-series North and South. Francis won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2007.

Currently on GH, Anna is battling her own demons after taking matters into her own hands regarding her lover’s murder. Her guilt has been weighing heavy on her but could the man she killed really be alive after all? Meanwhile, Laura holds onto a big secret for the sake of her loved ones. Can she convince her son Nikolas to do the right thing and reveal Jake’s true identity? Will she be able to help her troubled grandson and get Liz to focus on what’s real?

“We are thrilled that Genie and Finola will continue to make General Hospital their home for years to come,” said executive producer Frank Valentini. “These enormously talented actresses have created timeless characters that resonate with our fans.”

General Hospital, which celebrated its 52nd anniversary on April 1, 2015, is both the longest running American soap opera currently in production and the longest running scripted television drama currently in production.  In 2012, General Hospital won the prestigious Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Drama for a record 11th time. General Hospital was created by Frank and Doris Hursley. Frank Valentini is the executive producer. General Hospital airs weekly on the ABC Television Network.

My Take: This is good news for GH fans. Anna and Laura are important roles that embody both the show’s past and present. Both actress are among the best talents in daytime and GH needs strong female roles that also serve as moral compasses for the series.

It’s a Mad, Mad World

For nearly a decade, Mad Men has been a Sunday night ritual for me. As a show that focused on an era that was before my time, I was still able to relate to it. I saw how much things have changed as well as how they have stayed the same. A lot of the issues that the series touched upon such as sexism, politics and race are still issues that plague our everyday existence though in modernized, less obvious forms.

One of the many things that I’ve always enjoyed about Mad Men is the vivid characters and their journey’s through the corporate wasteland. If you watch the very first episode of the series and then the last episode back to back, you’ll see that almost every character has gone through a noticeable change. Yet none of these changes feel out of character because I watched it all happen organically over seven seasons. The Joan who spent the majority of the first season as a type of madam to the office secretaries while trying to land a husband is vastly different from the single mother and business owner that she ended up being. But it all makes sense given the obstacles she has had over the course of 10 years.

Mad Men has often taken a look at the more melancholy aspects of the 1960s and the ideals of the era in which the characters were trapped. I was expecting the finale to be bleak as a result. Don (Jon Hamm) would die or go crazy. Joan (Christina Hendricks) would settle for being the woman behind an undeserving man. Roger (John Slattery) would remain the immature playboy. Someone would jump out a window. After getting to know and care about these characters, it wasn’t what I wanted but what I expected.

Mad Men surprised me one last time by doing the unexpected and giving the fans what they wanted, a lot of happy endings. It was groovy. Roger finally found a woman that was his match and acknowledged the son he shares with Joan. Joan started her own production company Holloway Harris. Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) decided being a cad was unfulfilling, reconciled with Trudy (Alison Brie) and took an impressive new job. Stan (Jay R. Ferguson) and Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) admitted their feelings for each other and I didn’t even care if it mimicked every romcom ever made (This was my favorite part of the episode by the way).

The only unhappy ending belonged to Betty (January Jones) who had recently learned that she had lung cancer and only six months to live. I always found Betty to be the most tragic character on show so perhaps this ending was the most fitting ending for her. But it also felt like a bit of a victory in a strange way. She decided to leave on her own terms, ones in which she behaved like everything was fine, and didn’t let anyone else talk her out of it.

That brings us to the shows lead character, the ever dapper Don Draper. Don hadn’t really been the most riveting character to watch this season. His depressing affair with a fragile waitress followed by one of his famous disappearing acts were like sadder versions of past story lines. He was detached from his family, friends and co-workers. In the end, Don didn’t turn out to be D. B. Cooper or the man in the credits falling from an office window. Don ended his journey in very Don-like fashion, as a mad man.

Stuck at a yoga retreat, Don sat cross-legged in the grass, with his eyes closed and a smile gently forming on his face. This is the moment the famous 1971 Coca-Cola commercial was born. The one where a diverse cast of young people drink Coke while singing about love and harmony. Though not shown, the viewers are told through this commercial that Don returned to his job in the advertising business and soon after created one of the most iconic television advertisements ever. Don got his groove back. An unpredictable yet fitting ending.

For Mad Men, a happy ending was so unexpected that it was actually daring. The show could have easily ended on a dark note and left its characters in despair. But maybe ending the show about the business men and women who evoked our deepest emotions to sell us what we didn’t know we wanted with a warm fuzzy feeling was the only thing that made sense.
