The upcoming second season of Netflix’s Ryan Murphy’s anthology series “Monster” has made an exciting casting decision that promises to bring an added layer of intrigue to the show. Fresh talents Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, two promising actors, will be stepping into the roles of the notorious Menendez brothers, Erik and Lyle respectively.

Deadline was the first to break the casting news.

Following a captivating first season that delved into the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, “Monster” is shifting gears to explore the chilling story of the Menendez brothers. These siblings, who were convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents, claimed their actions were driven by years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The case, which continues to evolve in real-time, recently took an unexpected twist when the Menendez brothers sought a new hearing based on allegations made by former Menudo band member, Roy Rosselló, against José Menendez.

As the extent of the Menendez brothers’ lives that will be featured in Season 2 remains a mystery, Netflix is simultaneously planning a documentary feature on the duo for a more comprehensive view of their lives and crimes. This dual narrative approach sets an interesting stage for the upcoming season.

The casting of Nicholas Chavez as Lyle Menendez is an inspired choice. A relative newcomer, Chavez quickly made a name for himself in the acting world with his riveting portrayal of the troubled Spencer Cassadine in the long-standing soap opera “General Hospital”. His excellent work in the show earned him a Daytime Emmy® for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Daytime Drama and the 2021 Soap Hub Award for Favorite Newcomer. In 2023, he was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor. His rise to prominence was further highlighted when People Magazine featured him in their “People’s Ones to Watch” section in 2022.

Chavez, a Houston-born actor who grew up primarily in Denver, has always been drawn to performing. After spending some time at the Rutgers performing arts program, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue acting full time. This dedication is clearly paying off as he navigates his way through the industry, recently appearing as Jason in the Tubi original film “Crushed”. Off-screen, Chavez enjoys playing chess and traveling, showcasing his diverse interests beyond acting.

Cooper Koch, who will be playing Erik Menendez, has also started making waves in the industry. Koch’s previous work includes a role in Season 1 of the Starz drama “Power Book II: Ghost,” and horror films “Swallowed” and “They/Them”.

Netflix and Murphy’s representatives have refrained from commenting on the casting, but it’s understood that the selections were finalized before the writer’s strike. Murphy, the co-creator of “American Horror Story,” hasn’t been involved in any project activities since the walkout. Despite this, the anticipation for “Monster” Season 2 continues to build, promising viewers a season that is as enthralling as it is chilling.

New Line Cinema is set to deliver another action-packed blow to the big screen with its sequel to the 2021 hit, “Mortal Kombat”. The studio has confirmed the addition of four new members to its star-studded cast, adding further anticipation for fans of the beloved video game franchise. The impressive ensemble now includes Martyn Ford, Desmond Chiam, Ana Thu Nguyen, and Damon Herriman, each set to portray iconic characters from the Mortal Kombat universe.

Mortal Kombat’s legacy as a video game franchise remains iconic, and its 2021 cinematic adaptation brought new life to the series, even amidst the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The film grossed over $84 million worldwide and was one of the most-watched titles on the Max streaming platform, solidifying its success in both theaters and online streaming platforms.

Bodybuilder-turned-actor Martyn Ford, known for his roles in films like “F9: The Fast Saga” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” will be stepping into the mighty shoes of Shao Kahn. Shao Kahn, the Emperor of Outworld, is a central antagonist in the Mortal Kombat series, known for his awe-inspiring strength, dark magic, and relentless quest to conquer realms.

Desmond Chiam, recognized for his work in the Marvel series “The Falcon and Winter Soldier” and Netflix’s “Partner Track,” is set to portray King Jerrod, the former king of Edenia and husband to Queen Sindel. Ana Thu Nguyen, who starred in “Get Free” and “The Spy Who Never Dies,” will bring to life the character of Queen Sindel, a long-standing character known for her banshee-like scream, flight, and her ability to manipulate hair.

Adeline Rudolph has been announced to play Princess Kitana, the daughter of Sindel and King Jerrod. Kitana, first introduced in Mortal Kombat II in 1993, is renowned for her agility, beauty, and deadly fan weapons. Despite her harsh upbringing in Outworld, she eventually turns against Shao Kahn and fights for the freedom of her home realm, Edenia, adding a depth of emotion to the otherwise action-packed narrative.

Damon Herriman, acclaimed for his portrayal of Charles Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Netflix’s “Mindhunter,” will depict the Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, adding to the film’s roster of villains.

The sequel will also see the return of the original cast. Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao, are all set to reprise their roles.

The director’s chair will once again be occupied by Simon McQuoid, with the sequel scripted by Jeremy Slater. The producers’ team consists of Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Michael Clear, Broken Road Productions’ Todd Garner, McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh.

With the cast finalized and the production in full swing, “Mortal Kombat 2” promises to be an even bigger success, capturing the spirit of the iconic video game series and delivering a cinematic experience that fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting.

As soap opera enthusiasts are well aware, change is an integral part of the genre’s landscape. Yet, the announcement of Kate Mansi joining the cast of “General Hospital” as the beloved character, Kristina Corinthos-Davis, has still caused quite a stir. Mansi, who received won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Abigail Deveraux-Dimera on NBC/Peacock’s “Days of our Lives,” opened up about her surprising career move in a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest.

Mansi shared intimate details from her initial Zoom meeting with “General Hospital’s” executive producer, Frank Valentini, and casting director, Mark Teschner. She expressed gratitude for their commendations regarding her past performances and valued their insights into the unique environment of “General Hospital.”

Assuming the role of Kristina, a complex character caught between two worlds with dysfunctional family dynamics, and one who happens to be bisexual, helping her younger sister deal with a endometriosis diagnosis, is no small undertaking. Yet, Mansi seems to be embracing the challenge with enthusiasm and sensitivity. She acknowledges the importance of respecting the legacy of the character, particularly the contributions of her predecessor, Lexi Ainsworth. In a testament to her considerate nature, Mansi reached out to Ainsworth, whom she calls a friend, ensuring her understanding of the profound respect she holds for her work.

The transition from Ainsworth to Mansi will inevitably be a process for the show’s loyal viewers. Mansi recognizes the complexity of this shift, expressing that her portrayal of Kristina will reflect both continuity and change. Drawing from her personal experiences in the realm of soap opera recasting, she advocates for a nuanced perspective from the fans. She articulates that the daytime drama world is a place where fans can simultaneously appreciate different portrayals of the same character, insisting that love for one actor does not diminish admiration for another.

As Mansi prepares to step into the shoes of Kristina, she expresses gratitude and excitement for the opportunity. She is eager to make her mark on the Davis family storyline and invites viewers to welcome this new wave of change with open arms.

For a more comprehensive glimpse into Mansi’s transition to “General Hospital,” fans are encouraged to read her full interview in the upcoming issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Walt Willey, renowned for his role as attorney Jackson Montgomery on the defunct ABC soap opera “All My Children,” is set to make a guest appearance on “General Hospital” (GH) this coming July.

Soap Opera Digest was the first to break the news of his casting. Willey’s reprisal marks the first time an “All My Children” character has appeared in the ABC Cinematic Universe since the series’ cancellation in 2011. Any plans to incorporate AMC into GH fell apart when Prospect Park, who licensed the rights to “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” filed suit against ABC after multiple characters from OLTL crossed over during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2016.

Jackson Montgomery was a distinguished attorney and eminent resident of the fictional town of Pine Valley, playing a critical role in the narrative of the series. Introduced in 1987, he continued to be a vital character until the show concluded in 2011.

He was known for his fierce pursuit of justice and complicated relationships, particularly his intermittent romantic involvement with the series’ matriarch, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci). This primary storyline spanned numerous years, with their intense and occasionally stormy love story holding viewers spellbound.

This isn’t Willey’s first time crossing over for his character, Jack, having previously appeared on “The City” in 1996.

Steve Burton Set Return to Salem in Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem!

Rumors have been swirling for a while now that Steve Burton would be joining the cast of Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem and today we got confirmation that the rumors are true! Representatives from Peacock, the streaming service that is home to Beyond Salem confirmed today that Burton is part of the cast for the upcoming installment of the Days of our Lives series spin off!

Soap fans know that Burton got his start on Days of our Lives in 1988 when he played the recurring role of Harris Michaels for multiple episodes. He later went on to soap opera super stardom as Jason Morgan on General Hospital. He left GH in November of 2021 over the vaccine mandate put in place by ABC/Disney, saying at the time in an Instagram video for his fans. “I know there’s been a lot of rumors and speculation about me and I wanted you to hear it from me personally. Unfortunately, General Hospital has let me go because of the vaccine mandate.” At the time, he expressed hopes that he would be able to return to GH when the mandate was lifted but as of right now, it is still in place.

When we last saw Jason Morgan he was being buried under a collapsing tunnel and presumed dead. No body was ever found which seems to have left the door open for an eventual return and repeated onscreen mentions of the character has fueled a lot of speculation by fans that a return was imminent, speculation that was quieted, at least momentarily, by today’s news.

Burton revealed in an interview with SoapHub that he is reprising the role of Harris Michaels. “I started my daytime career on Days of our Lives in 1988 while on a hiatus from the sitcom I was doing called Out of This World when I was a senior in high school. It’s been really cool to reprise the character I started with, Harris Michaels.”

DOOL Head Writer Ron Carlivati took to Twitter shortly after the news was announced to share his excitement over the news.

We are looking forward to next week’s episode of his weekly podcast, That’s Awesome with Steve and Bradford, which he co-hosts with Bradford Anderson, Spinelli on General Hospital to see if Burton reveals any additional details about his character.

Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem will return with 5 new episodes starting Monday, July 11. New episodes will drop daily until July 15. It will be available exclusively on Peacock premium. Stay tuned to TV Source for all the Beyond Salem breaking news and exclusive interviews coming your way soon!
