As soap opera enthusiasts are well aware, change is an integral part of the genre’s landscape. Yet, the announcement of Kate Mansi joining the cast of “General Hospital” as the beloved character, Kristina Corinthos-Davis, has still caused quite a stir. Mansi, who received won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Abigail Deveraux-Dimera on NBC/Peacock’s “Days of our Lives,” opened up about her surprising career move in a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest.

Mansi shared intimate details from her initial Zoom meeting with “General Hospital’s” executive producer, Frank Valentini, and casting director, Mark Teschner. She expressed gratitude for their commendations regarding her past performances and valued their insights into the unique environment of “General Hospital.”

Assuming the role of Kristina, a complex character caught between two worlds with dysfunctional family dynamics, and one who happens to be bisexual, helping her younger sister deal with a endometriosis diagnosis, is no small undertaking. Yet, Mansi seems to be embracing the challenge with enthusiasm and sensitivity. She acknowledges the importance of respecting the legacy of the character, particularly the contributions of her predecessor, Lexi Ainsworth. In a testament to her considerate nature, Mansi reached out to Ainsworth, whom she calls a friend, ensuring her understanding of the profound respect she holds for her work.

The transition from Ainsworth to Mansi will inevitably be a process for the show’s loyal viewers. Mansi recognizes the complexity of this shift, expressing that her portrayal of Kristina will reflect both continuity and change. Drawing from her personal experiences in the realm of soap opera recasting, she advocates for a nuanced perspective from the fans. She articulates that the daytime drama world is a place where fans can simultaneously appreciate different portrayals of the same character, insisting that love for one actor does not diminish admiration for another.

As Mansi prepares to step into the shoes of Kristina, she expresses gratitude and excitement for the opportunity. She is eager to make her mark on the Davis family storyline and invites viewers to welcome this new wave of change with open arms.

For a more comprehensive glimpse into Mansi’s transition to “General Hospital,” fans are encouraged to read her full interview in the upcoming issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Summer is returning to Genoa City, but she’ll look different than she did before. The Young and the Restless has cast Allison Lanier as the new Summer Newman.

Previously played by Emmy winning actress Hunter King (2012-2016; 2018-2021), King exited the series last summer with co-star Michael Mealor after failing to come to terms on a new contract. Mealor has since returned to the series with a big storyline — Kyle’s mother Diane, long thought to be dead has been alive this whole time! He makes his on-screen return next week. So it’s no surprise his love wouldn’t be that far behind.

Although Lanier is new to daytime, she has prior acting experience. She had a recurring role as as Annabelle on the Amazon series, Red Oaks and appeared in indie films Mia and Fish Bones.

Allison Lanier will make her soap debut in May.

Actress Sydney Mikayla, who plays the popular Trina Robinson on ABC’s General Hospital, has made the difficult decision to vacate her role on the long running soap in order to focus on her academics. Her final airfare is March 17.

Mikayla, who is currently enrolled in UCLA, has balanced work while also experiencing her first year or university. The actress gave an exclusive statement to Soap Opera Digest about her decision to exit. “I have loved working on General Hospital, but I feel like this is the right time to dive in and enjoy my college experience to the fullest. The cast has become family and bringing the character of Trina to life has been one of the best experiences of my career thus far. Thank you to Frank and the entire team for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity. I will miss working with everyone every day, but I am excited to see what is to come for the show.”

Sydney Mikayla took over the role of Trina Robinson in 2019. Originally introduced as just a friend of Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), the role was expanded when Mikayla was cast, introducing her mother, Dr. Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr) and later her father, 90s fan favorite Marcus Taggert (Real Andrews). In recent months the character has been in a slow burn romance with Cassadine heir Spencer Cassadine (played by Nicholas Alexander Chavez).

Executive producer Frank Valentini commented on Sydney Mikayla’s exit writing, “We love her and are sad to see her go, but of course support her decision and wish her the best.”

Look for her successor, Tabyana Ali, to assume the role in late March. Valentini had pleasant words for the actress rekindle on the new role. “We’re excited to welcome Tabyana Ali and see what she’ll do with the role of Trina.”

Tabyana Ali’s credits include Horror Noire (2021), The Big Show Show (2020) and A Kid Called Mayonnaise (2017).

General Hospital airs weekends on ABC.

My Take: It would be an understatement to say I am saddened to see Sydney Mikayla exit. However, I am so happy that she is choosing to focus on her education and that she made the decision herself. I am rooting for Sydney’s succeed in every facet of her life and career. She has inspired so much joy to her fans, especially young girls who was able to see themselves in her character. May her next journey be wonderful & fulfilling. She will be missed.

I am also extremely pleased to see GH’s continued investment in the Trina character. The decision to recast Trina is a big deal. It proves the powers still have big plans for the role and find it vital to find someone else to keep the character alive. I look forward to seeing what Tabyana Ali brings to Trina. Congratulations on joining the cast of General Hospital. I cannot wait to see your take on the role.

When you hear the word recast, there is always a certain expectation and often, apprehension about what is to come, especially in a role as iconic as Dr. Taylor Hayes on CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful. With her beloved predecessor, who originated the role in 1990, Hunter Tylo, declining to come back, the door was open for Days of our Lives alum, Krista Allen to audition and secure the role of the great doctor.

Taylor began her journey as a psychiatrist for the dying Caroline Spencer (Joanna Johnson) and ended up marrying Caroline’s husband after her death. She went on to have three children from the union as well as several hiatuses throughout Tylo’s portrayal. Depicted as a world-renowned psychiatrist, Taylor was introduced to act as a romantic lead for Ridge Forrester. In the beginning Taylor was shown to be an educated, level-headed alternative to Brooke, portrayed by Katherine Kelly Lang. While Brooke schemed and instigated, Taylor took a different approach to her relationship with Ridge Forrester, then-portrayed by Ronn Moss.

Most of her history has revolved around her relationship with love interest Ridge Forrester. Taylor battled Brooke Logan for Ridge’s affections and had many legendary bouts. During Tylo’s tenure, Taylor and Ridge achieved super couple status and became a very popular pairing. While Ridge and Taylor had their ups and downs, most of their dramatic twists were the result of Tylo vacating the role several times over the years. Most memorably Taylor’s two presumed deaths.

Krista Allen’s first scenes as the illustrious Dr. Hayes did not disappoint. Sharing her first scenes with her onscreen daughter, Steffy, portrayed by Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, the missing mother-daughter connection was restored, and Allen shined alongside the two-time Emmy winner, proving why she was in fact, the woman for the job. Effortlessly, Allen floated in, bringing the much-needed breath of fresh air, filling the void of maternal absence in the case of the Forrester siblings.

In addition to looking amazing opposite her TV daughter, Allen had noticeable sparks with Taylor’s former flame, Ridge, now portrayed by Thorsten Kaye. On Friday’s episode, even with the two across the room, fans were set ablaze and took to their social media accounts, praising the chemistry of the once beloved couple. While the excitement was anticipated, the actual scenes outsold.

With Steffy being summoned by Thomas to Forrester Creations, this leaves nothing but time for Taylor to catch up with her ex-husband. Sharing her regrets for all she missed over the years, the birth of her grandchildren, weddings, accidents, Taylor has a real moment with Ridge that instigates light flirtation that left some viewers saying “whoa, Ridge, you’re a married man.”

When Taylor admits to missing her kids, she also has kind sentiments for her ex. “I’ve missed you too, Ridge.” And Ridge also has an emotional response to her, telling her that he’s missed her smile and goes on to say how much he loves her ability to put others first. With genuine smiles present, Ridge and Taylor displayed their close bond, wowing the audience and reviving (possible) faith in a couple we’d long written off. Brooke Logan had better hold on to her pearls and her man.

Krista has yet to share scenes with her onscreen rival, Katherine Kelly Lang, who portrays Brooke Logan, but if the magic we’ve witnessed with her onscreen family is any inclination, the audience should be in for a treat once they romantic rivals come face to face. And one thing I am personally looking forward to is seeing Taylor interact with her new son in law as well as his volatile mother, Shelia, portrayed by Kimberlin Brown. Taylor and Shelia share an intricate history, as Shelia is responsible for one of Taylor’s “deaths.” With that being said, the sheer friction of their interaction should be a joy to watch Allen sink her teeth into.

With Ridge’s marriage in trouble (as it often is) because of Brooke’s former lover and father of her child, and Taylor being back in town, there is sure to be some drama from the old flames. Let the cat fights, husband stealing, and meddling in the affairs of their grown children’s lives begin.

Hunter Tylo will be dearly missed, she really breathed so much life into the character of Taylor Hayes, but we’d be lying if we denied Krista’s contributions thus far. She may be new to the role, but she’s captured the essence of classic Dr. Taylor Hayes, and I for one can’t wait to see more.

The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Episodes are also available on Paramount Plus.

Entertainment Weekly broke the news exclusively that former All My Children star Cameron Mathison (ex-Ryan Lavery) will be joining the cast of ABC’s General Hospital as Andrew “Drew” Cain, last played by fan favorite actor Billy Miller.

Drew Cain is the long-lost son of the late Alan Quartermaine and Susan Moore, the identical twin brother of Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), whom an amnesiac Drew believed he was for a time. When Drew first arrived in Port Charles – post accident that resulted in facial reconstruction and a lost memory – he adopted the name Jake Doe, later romancing and becoming engaged to Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) who later ended up marrying Drew’s childhood best friend Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth).

After his relationship with Elizabeth blew up upon the reveal that he was Jason Morgan, while he believed he was his twin brother, Drew fell in love with and had a child with Samantha McCall-Morgan until the real Jason Morgan showed up alive and well.

After the demise of his relationship with Sam, Drew, who was also an ex-Navy Seal, concentrated on building a relationship with his recently discovered teenage son, Oscar Nero, who was battling cancer and ultimately died. While grieving for his son, Drew began researching his past, which he had no memories of thanks to a memory swapping performed by Andre Maddox and Peter August. Unfortunately, before the truth could be uncovered, Peter arranged for a plane that Drew was traveling on to disappear, and he was presumed dead in 2019.

Look for Cameron Mathison to make his debut on Monday, August 16, 2021. The Hallmark Home and Family revealed that he began filming July 9. As for what fans can expect to see, the actor teased that Drew is in trouble and will be reaching out to former flame Sam for help.

Former All My Children star Cady McClain has joined the cast of NBC’s Days of our Lives. The Emmy award winning actress has been hired to “temporarily” assume the role of Jennifer Horton, played by Melissa Reeves.

Reeves, who lives in Tennessee, made the decision not to return to Los Angeles when the series resumed filming this month after an extended production shutdown due to the coronavirus. She recently became a grandmother, and is expecting another grandchild later this month. Though the actress was embroiled in controversy over the summer due to social media, that did not factor into her decision not to return to set.

Cady McClain is a two-time Emmy Award winning actor, filmmaker, musician and writer whose professional career spans more than thirty years. Her credits include studio and independent films, network and cable television, New Media, Off-Broadway theater, and performance art.

McClain is best known for her role as All My Children’s Dixie Cooney-Martin, which she played off and on from 1988 until the series cancellation in 2011. McClain jumped ship to CBS’ As the World Turns in 2002, taking over the role of Rosanna Cabot. In 2005, McClain returned to AMC, playing a much darker and jaded Dixie. Her return was short-lived, as then-head writer Megan McTavish killed off the beloved character in 2007 during the ill-received “Satin Slayer” storyline, which saw Dixie murdered after eating poisoned banana pancakes. Over the next three years, McClain bounced back and forth between AMC and ATWT, reprising Rosanna in six month blocks and appearing on AMC as Dixie in spiritual form. After ABC canceled All My Children in 2011, McClain returned for the remainder of the series, appearing the final four months of episodes. In 2013, she appeared in the online reboot of the series for its first and only season. In 2014, she joined The Young and the Restless, taking over the role of Kelly Andrews from Cynthia Watros (currently General Hospital‘s Nina).

Look for McClain to begin airing late October-early November. It is unknown how long she will “temporarily” be in the role.

Days of our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Episodes are available on NBC.com, onDemand and Peacock.

General Hospital is bringing back another legacy character! TVLine reports Amanda Setton (Gossip Girl, Hawaii-Five-0) will assume the role of Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth) and Lois Cerullo’s daughter Brook Lynn Ashton Quartermaine!

Setton will make her debut Monday, November 18. Brook Lynn is the second legacy character to return since new head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor took over creative. Last month, Marcus Coloma debuted as a recast for Nikolas Cassadine.

Previously played by Adrienne Leon (2004-2006; 2010-2011), the last time Brook Lynn was in Port Charles she had taken a bit of a heel turn. With her music career stalled, she was hired by Carly (Laura Wright) to break up childhood friend Dante (then-Dominic Zamprogna) and Lulu (then-Julie Berman). When that goes terribly wrong, Brook Lynn found a job and later short-lived romance with Nikolas (then-Tyler Christopher).

This isn’t Setton’s first venture into daytime. Setton had a two-year stint on ABC’s defunct soap One Life to Live as vixen-socialite Kimberly Andrews-Buchanan. Her additional credits include recurring roles on Gossip Girl, Hawaii Five-0 and series regular roles on The Mindy Project, The Crazy Ones.

So why is Lois and Ned’s baby girl in town? Does this have anything to do with our newly resurrected Nikolas? Will she have problems with her step-mommy Olivia (Lisa LoCicero)? Is she still trying for a singing career? We will just have to wait and find out.

General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Episodes are available on ABC.com and Hulu.

First rule of being a soap fan? Never get too attached. The CW’s Dynasty is leaning heavily into its genre staple with yet another big casting shakeup. TVLine is exclusively reporting that Ana Brenda Contreras will not return for the series’ third season. The role will be recast with Daniella Alonso.

Executive producer Josh Reims told TVLine: “Unfortunately, Ana Brenda Contreras will not be returning for the third season of Dynasty due to personal reasons. We’d like to thank her for her contributions to the show and wish her all the best. We’re excited to welcome Daniella Alonso who will step into the role of Cristal.”

This is the latest in high-profile cast turnover for the little CW drama that could. Original star Nathalie Kelley, who played the first Cristal Flores aka Celia Machado, departed after the first season. Brenda Contreras was tapped to play the “real” Cristal Flores for Season 2. Original cast member James Mackay (Steven Carrington) was bumped to recurring in the second season. And of course the mother of all exists – Nicollete Sheridan (Alexis Carrington) exited the sophomore season and was temporarily recast with her on-screen daughter Elizabeth Gillies (who plays Fallon). Yikes.

So who is the new Cristal? New York native Daniella Alonso is a model-turned-actress with over two television dozen credits. She has soap experience — one of her early credits was a three-month stint on CBS’ As the World Turns as Pilar Domingo. She would go on to appear in regular and/or recurring roles in One Tree Hill, Friday Night Lights, My Generation, Revolution, The Night Shift, Being Mary Jane, Animal Kingdom and The Resident.

Dynasty returns for its third season Friday, October 11 at 9PM. Past seasons are available to watch on Netflix.
